The following is drawn from a social media post by professor Alessandro Morosin, adapted for publication by IEC with his permission.
In the midst of this imperialist U.S.-Israeli war on Iran by Bibi and Trump, two genocidal fascists, it remains more crucial than ever that actual internationalists of every background and from every corner of the globe, speak out and rally to FREE IRAN'S POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW. We need global solidarity with Iran’s political prisoners, disappeared students, workers, teachers, women, queer folk, and thousands of executed comrades (as in, killed in cold blood by hanging or stoning— well over a thousand people in 2025, and climbing in 2026 -- the IRI regime remains a world leader in capital punishment).
This global solidarity that I’m speaking about is especially needed here in the U.S. empire that funded the CIA coup installing Mohammad Reza Shah. That well documented event in 1953 ended up destabilizing and traumatizing Iranian society (yes, even if the remaining exiled Shah fans will never admit this fact). And that coup didn’t ONLY matter for Iranians. Its drastic results were international, as it accelerated the West /U.S. overthrowing scores of other popularly elected governments and leaders in other countries.
We need to free the birds and burn the cages. Humanity can’t afford to perpetuate these dungeons like Iran’s Evin prison and the many, many others (like the global gulags being backed by the U.S. in El Salvador and other places). Nor can the human spirit endure so much of this tired old war mongering, militarization, resource extractivism, surveillance-capitalism, borders and camps.
Here, I am mostly speaking to those who identify as “leftists” who DEFEND the IRI. If leftists can’t at least agree on principles like due process, no executions, no torture, and on the universally patriarchal and repressive character of any and all religiously based regimes WITHIN a capitalist world-system, then we’re not actually moving history forward. As has been pointed out over and over by sections of Iranians themselves, we need to oppose this brutal imperialist-Zionist war on Iran, while we stand with actual anti-regime freedom fighters and revolutionaries among Iranians whether inside Iran or in exile. This is an invitation to broaden our strategic alliances with actual oppressed populations such as Iran’s many political prisoners, who are being tortured and executed daily, to extend our empathy.
I know the International Emergency Campaign To Free Iran’s Political Prisoners Now (IEC) as a dedicated team of volunteers who regularly compile the most up to date information on what's happening with Iranian prisoners' political resistance. They are unique for rejecting the false 'choices' of U.S. imperialism (or any other superpower) and theocratic political Islam (Iran’s sham 'anti-imperialism' which is also drenched in the blood of the masses). Without the IEC and their persistent links with key prisoners and their families abroad, the world would have even less access to some of the bravest, most outstanding heroic fighters and forward-thinkers being held in Iran’s dungeons and being sent to its gallows.
The IEC’s efforts need to grow, especially among youth, intelligentsia, artists and anti-war activists and all others who are tired of the BS about needing to support every reactionary nationalist regime that repress workers, women, youth, intellectuals, and ethnic minorities because they oppose the bigger reactionary regimes of the U.S./Israel.
I call on YOU to volunteer, donate, spread the word using the resources on the IEC website, especially the prescient message from its Emergency Appeal issued in March 2021 that I am signatory to:
All of Iran's political prisoners must be unconditionally and immediately released. The governments of the U.S. and Iran act from their national interests. And, in this instance, we the people of the U.S. and Iran, along with the people of the world, have OUR shared interests, as part of getting to a better world: to unite to defend the political prisoners of Iran. In the U.S., we have a special responsibility to unite very broadly against this vile repression by the IRI, and to actively oppose any war moves by the U.S. government that would bring even more unbearable suffering to the people of Iran. We demand of the Islamic Republic of Iran: FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS NOW! We say to the U.S government: NO THREATS OR WAR MOVES AGAINST IRAN, LIFT U.S. SANCTIONS!
STOP EXECUTIONS!
In solidarity,
